Have you ever looked around Spokane and thought, wow, this would make a great photo? We should get family/individual photos with this view! If you haven't said that to yourself yet, you haven't lived in Spokane long enough. We've been here for only a few months, but already we've seen so many gorgeous views and beautiful seasons (I'm looking at you, fall!).
However, finding a good photographer can be tough. You want someone who is good at what they do, knows great areas to get beautiful shots, and someone with editing skills (because let's be honest, few of us are flawless! We need that editing software magic!).
If you've been looking for a photographer in Spokane, whether it's for graduation photos, holiday cards, maternity shoots, family milestone photos or any other event you want to celebrate, let me introduce you to Theresa Burkhart of Theresa Burkhart Photography!
Everyday Spokane: Please tell us a little bit about yourself, like where you’re from, what brought you to Spokane, how long have you been a photographer, etc.
Hi! I’m Theresa, I’m 23 years old, married, and the mother to a beautiful 1 ½ year old toddler boy. Originally I’m from Germany, a beautiful little village called Pressath in the Upper Palatinate (Bavaria) and I came to the United States when I was just shy of 18 years old. Photography has always been a big part of me, but it wasn’t until I moved across the world that I made a career out of it. August 2019 marks 5 years of being a full time Photographer and I have loved every minute of it!
What or who first sparked your interest in photography?
My mom. She always took photos of everyone and everything. I love having those memories of my childhood that otherwise might have been forgotten.
What types of photography do you specialize in?
I specialize in outdoor family photography, but I also take senior, engagement and maternity portraits.
What should people ask or look for when they are interested in hiring a photographer for family shoots, holiday photos, etc.?
I think the most important thing is to make sure you like their style. Look at their portfolio before anything else. Each photographer has a different shooting, posing and editing style. If you like what you see, get in touch with plenty of time in advance (preferably) and then see how you “click” with the photographer’s personality!
What’s one thing that people should know before they arrive for a photography session?
Make sure you arrive on time. This is a big one. Photography is the art of capturing light. Many times we schedule your session based on the time of the sunset/sunrise and every minute counts. If you arrive even just 10 minutes late that can make a world of difference in how your photos will look.
Where is the best place in Spokane (or the surrounding area) to take photos?
I am a huge fan of Mirabeau Park. If I could I would do every single session there. It’s such a beautiful park and there are thousands of different backdrops and views that I love to capture in my Client’s portraits. Tree tops, mountain views, rivers, a waterfall, rocks, dirt roads, rocky roads, bushes, trees, tall grass, open fields, green grass, fences for leading lines and wildflowers in spring. What more can you ask for?
Are there any hidden gems in Spokane that a lot of people don’t know about, but are perfect for taking photos?
Also Mirabeau Park. A lot of people only explore the wood side of it, the area where events are held. But the whole park has so much more to offer. Check the Centennial trail side of it along Spokane River. It’s breathtaking.
If someone is looking to book spring, graduation, wedding, or holiday photo shoots, how much in advance should they contact a photographer?
As soon as you’re thinking about it! The sooner the better. If you book far in advance it gives us enough time to get to know each other, chat, talk, pick outfits and do everything else we need to do to make your vision for your session come true. Last minute bookings are doable, but it’s harder to find a photographer that is available.
