Make parchment bookmarks using medieval techniques and materials with Artist-In-Residence at The Hive®, Hannah Charlton!
For over one thousand years, all books were copied and decorated by hand. We call them “illuminated manuscripts” because the text was lit up with color and gold. Learn about the history of illuminated manuscripts, the process of making paints, and how a team would come together to bring a text to life.
No experience is necessary in this hands-on class. All materials will be supplied.
About Hannah: Hannah Charlton is an Artist-In-Residence at the Hive® working on a 49-piece series based on the 15th century “The Book of the City of Ladies” by Christine de Pizan. She creates medieval-style illuminated manuscripts using gouache, gold, and ink on vegan parchment. “My work challenges our ideas about the Middle Ages, showing a time of stunning beauty and social change.”
